17. Ellieâs Offerings
By eight oâclock the following morning, Adeline, my mother, Christine and I had all finished reading The Witch Who Hated Halloween. Even with some of its pages missing it was a long book, but weâd managed it with the help of coffee and chocolate.
âSo,â said my mother, her eyes bleary. âI think we can safely say that we now know whatâs going on here.â
Christine took a long glug of strong coffee, her face pale. âWell, Bea, itâs up to you. I think we should have the meeting here, where we can make sure the only ones who know are the ones who need to.â
My mother looked unsure. âHiding things from the public and having far too much sway over the Peacemakers is exactly why Justine was the most unpopular Minister for Magical Law in recent history.â
I grasped my motherâs hand. âYou have to get over this, you know â trying to make yourself as different from Justine as possible. The Minister for Magical Law should be involved in what the Wayfarers do. You would never use us as your own personal army of bullies the way she did. As long as youâre transparent about it, I donât see why you shouldnât be involved in big cases like this one.â
She pulled her hand from mine, nibbling at her fingernails. I could sense the struggle going on within her. She wanted to be a part of all of this â and not just in a ministerial capacity. She didnât want to limit her involvement to approving our budget, or making announcements on television, or fielding questions about the case in the Wyrd Court. She wanted to be down on the ground with the rest of us. And now that Ariadneâs book had helped us understand what was going on here, she seemed all the more impatient to get her hands dirty.
âOkay,â she said. âCall everyone over here. I donât think having private meetings in my kitchen is being as transparent as Iâd like to be, but ⦠in circumstances like this, you and Christine are right. Before we frighten the public with what could be about to happen, we should see what we can do to stop it.â Her lips trembled. âAnd yes, I mean we. All of us. Because this could be the worst bad thing to happen since ⦠well, since the last bad thing happened.â
